SPAM Email from Shallowater ISD

Shallowater ISD is aware of email going out that appears to come from Shallowater staff members.  These emails often discuss an invoice or payment of some sort, and usually include a link to view the invoice or an attachment.  These emails are not authentic.  If you receive one of them, do not click on the link, or attachment, and delete.

Why am I getting an invoice from Shallowater ISD?

While we receive invoices via email, Shallowater ISD generally does not send out invoices via email.  The emails that are going out are not actually coming from Shallowater ISD computers or email servers.  In actuality, the emails are coming from different email addresses and servers across the world with a shallowaterisd.net address spoofed in the "From:" field.

I am familiar with the Shallowater ISD staff member and I have received emails from this staff member before.  How do spammers know my email address?

In late 2017, Shallowater ISD was infected with a virus on it's network for a short time.  The virus was successful in transmitting address book data from many of our email users to servers across the world.  Spammers are using this data to, in turn, send emails to other contacts and infect them.  While we were able to remove the virus from our network and computer systems, email addresses and contact information that were transmitted remain out in the world, and spammers are actively trying to use those contacts to further expand their reach.

Should I notify Shallowater ISD staff that I received one of these emails?

You may, however, staff usually aren't aware that these emails are being sent out and are unfortunately unable to prevent these emails from going out.
